June 1 Update

Can’t believe it’s June! Only JUST finished up second edition of 𝑬𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒏 π‘Ύπ’‰π’Šπ’•π’† π‘·π’Šπ’π’† and sent it to print, and started layout for π‘·π’‚π’•π’„π’‰π’˜π’π’“π’π’…. A bit behind. 1st full ep of 𝑯𝒆𝒓𝒆 π‘ͺπ’π’Žπ’†π’” 𝒕𝒉𝒆 π‘Ύπ’†π’Šπ’“π’…π’ 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒆 is out, to good reviews (about 30 views/listens so far). Next one featuringΒ The “Great” DemonioΒ on Monday. 𝑷𝒂𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒐𝒏 patrons have already seen it. Upcoming eps are very exciting.

For books and writing, π‘°π’Žπ’‘π’–π’π’”π’† π‘ͺ𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒅 is chugging along, π‘π’–π’π’π’š 𝑺𝒑𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝑭𝒐𝒐𝒍 𝒀𝒐𝒖𝒓 π‘π’“π’Šπ’†π’π’…π’” has its first illustration sketches from Daniel Milco, and the musical play 𝑻𝒉𝒆 π‘©π’‚π’„π’Œπ’π’Šπ’π’† is starting to take shape (VERY early days!). Most likely after PW comes out I’ll work on re-release and expansion of π‘ͺ𝒉𝒖𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒍 𝑺𝒖𝒓𝒇𝒆𝒓 𝑰𝑰 while working on IC and the cozy mystery I was working on when ‘Rona shut down my writing circuits.

Doing some work with Mynheras now, too!

Theatrically, I plan to bring Gonzo Rising to the theater this summer, as well as a return of π‘Ίπ’Šπ’π’π’š π‘Ίπ’π’‚π’Ž and 𝑳𝒆 π‘π’π’π’–π’“π’Šπ’”π’‰. And most likely a return to π‘΅π’Šπ’ˆπ’‰π’•π’Žπ’‚π’“π’†π’” 𝒂𝒏𝒅 π‘«π’“π’†π’‚π’Žπ’”π’„π’‚π’‘π’†π’” in October. And some sΓ©ances, too, mustn’t forget Liar’s Seance! And possibly a new winter show?

Continuing work with Kiki Cabaret SLC of course, and supporting such shows as Love Yourself! A BTS themed Burlesque Show coming up!

All while somehow, magically, keeping my time parceled out so I have enough downtime to not be constantly skirting burnout. Which, you know, means a lower paycheck, as almost none of these things is making me any money (for now). But pretty okay with how things are going.

As long as I keep up with my mental health regimen. Which I am doing pretty well with.

NEEEED to get back to Maine soon, though. If only I could keep some money in savings without, you know, needing new TEETH or something.

[Could seriously use some organization support and social media management support. Might be time to hire an assistant.]

Hm, need an image for the algorithm…how about screenshots of the first page of a google vanity search?

New year, new me!

2022 will bring more safe and hybrid shows to Alliance Theater and Scixxy’s Greater Shows!

SGS fans have the opportunity to fill out this brief survey to let us know what you’re most excited to see in the coming year.

April 1-3 is the Utah Variety Arts Conclave, and we have a survey to gather information about what local variety artists would most like to see in panels and workshops. Topics may include how to make a career out of your act, producing shows, taxes, developing various performing skills, busking, and a show! Registration opens in the new year.

SOS Improv is returning! A 6-week cycle starting January 11 at Alliance Theater

Jan 11, 18, 25; Feb 1, 8, 15 at Alliance Theater in Trolley Square. 6:30pm. $10 per class or $50 for entire 6-week course. Scix Maddix, Nathan Sears and Karren Shamo with over 100 years combined experience

Repo! The Genetic Opera is showing at Alliance Theater with a shadowcast

What is a hybrid show?

Alliance Theater specializes in the hybrid show: a limited live audience with an extended livestream audience. Think late-night talk show, with a live audience in the theater, but most people watch from home. We don’t have advertisers, though, and I think that’s an advantage. Ticket prices are set by the producers of the individual show, but are generally accessible — especially for a high-quality livestream such as we produce!

Gonzo Rising Fringe Fest finds its audience!

UtahTheaterBloggers.com tuned in to watch the livestream of the Hybrid show: Gonzo Rising Fringe Fest on Friday July 30 and published a stellar review!

SALT LAKE CITY β€” Over the past year or so, it feels like I’ve seen a million online performances. Scixxy’s Greater Shows’ Gonzo Rising: All-Weirdo Revue at the Alliance Theater is the first online performance that I truly wished I could have been in the live audience forβ€”not because the livestream was bad, but because the live audience looked like so so so much fun. The show, available both in person and streaming on Twitch, is a series of variety acts performed by fantastic weirdo artists.

Sam Rust, Utah Theatre Bloggers

I am inclined to agree with every word of this glowing appraisal. It was (and is) an amazing performance by all involved, including the venue itself, Alliance Theater in Salt Lake City. The livestream turned out professional and fun, the show itself was one of our strongest to date, and the audience are all now fast fans.

Well done, Gonzo Rising family. Well done.

As I mentioned at the beginning, I really wish I could have seen this performance live, not only because it looked like such a great environment, but also because they mentioned that there were otter pops in the lobby afterwards.

What is “Vaudeville Revival”?

In short, it’s a return to vaudeville, a type of stage show that was popular 100 years ago. Modern talent struts and frets on the stage. Vaudeville Revival is distinct from New Vaudeville, which was a movement that sort of petered out in the 90s.

Vaudeville Revival includes a lot of burlesque, comedy, music, and a particular appreciation for “weirdo” acts, acts in the style of The Great Gonzo. Weird stuff, leaving the audience whether or not to laugh. Past weirdo acts from the Gonzo Rising series of shows include some dissipated clowns, gender-bending poetry, ballet-dancing dinosaurs, alien opera. You know, the good stuff.

And Vaudeville Revival also stands as a force against the homogenization of stage variety shows. Newcomers, LGBT performers, performers of all races, cultures and body types are welcome!

And vaudeville, of course, always has this benefit for theater-goers: if you don’t like the current act, wait 10 minutes and something totally different will appear!

Here in Salt Lake City (and virtually), look forward to some Vaudeville Revival out of the Alliance Theater, with some old Gonzo stars, puppets, edgy burlesquers, improv comics, clowns, and possibly a real, old-school revivalist.
